Concert Review

So, Klumpen and I went to see Rufus Wainwright on Saturday night at the 9:30 Club.

The opening act was his sister, Lucy Wainwright Roche.  She was absolutely adorable.  Klumpen and I both wanted to take her home and keep her.  She has a clear, pure, sweet voice.  The perfect folk singer voice.  We thought it was odd that she opened the set with “The Parting Glass“, but she was such an engaging performer that it really didn’t matter.  She performed for about 50 minutes, and told rambling stories as introductions to the songs.  She also offered to sell family secrets if she ran out of copies of her EP to sell.

Rufus came on at about 10:00 pm.  It was just Rufus and the piano, or Rufus and the guitar.  No backing band, no big light show, etc.; just the music.  He played for about 2 hours.  He also tells rambling stories.  I think it’s a family trait.  He played most of the songs I wanted to hear, although ‘April Fools’ wasn’t one he played.  I also learned more about his sex life than I really needed, but that was incidental.

Klumpen drove both ways, and did fantastic, even with my crappy navi-guessing.  On the way home, our issue was with the ill-timed traffic lights in downtown DC.

All in all, we had a good time.

Today’s plan is to make cookies, and finally put up the Christmas tree.  We’ve not been feeling the holiday spirit, but we’re trying.
